The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) officially approved the hybrid concept for staging the Asia Cup after much debate. Najam Shetty, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, is pleased. At the same time, the PCB chief stated that the Indian Cricket Board's opinion on them is understood.
According to the hybrid concept, this year's Asia Cup will be held jointly between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Seti officially informed the ACC.
The Asia Cup ODI edition will take place from August 31st to September 17th. Four of the 13 matches will be staged in Pakistan, while the remaining nine will be held in Sri Lanka.
Pakistan was the original host of this year's Asia Cup. However, due to political differences, India did not have bilateral cricket links with Pakistan for a long time. This time, they have made it plain that the Indian government will not allow the national party to visit Pakistan. Pakistan even threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup in India this year.
India and Pakistan along with Nepal in the 'A' group in the preliminary phase of the tournament. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are in 'B' group. The top two teams from two groups will go to the Super Four stage. From there the top two teams will fight it out for the championship.
There will be a total of 13 matches in 13 days. If India and Pakistan make it to the final, the two arch-rivals will face each other thrice in a single tounamant.
Before the ODI World Cup, this time the Asia Cup will be in the ODI version. Sri Lanka became the champion of the last Asia Cup in the T20 edition.
Group A – Pakistan, India and Nepal.
Group B – Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
